Not only is this earflap hat design by Mary Ann Stephens unisex, deliciously cozy and hip-as-can-be, it's also a quick and very interesting knit. It's knit in any 3 shades you'd like of Dale of Norway Hubro 100% pure new wool bulky weight yarn at a super speedy 3 sts/inch. The one set of instructions works for 3 sizes - youth, adult average (shown) and adult large, provided you make minor gauge changes, as indicated in the pattern. The suggested needle sizes are US 11 (US 12, US 13) respectively.
The earflaps are knit flat; the main portion is knit circularly, in stranded knitting. Both sections feature textural details that add interest to the simple, but striking, motif. They're all short color spans, so no weaving-in is necessary.
All instructions and charts are included in the pattern.
The standard kit comes with the pattern, printed or emailed, plus 3 x 100g balls of Hubro, each in a different color that you select, below. The average adult-sized model shown was knit using 1 x 100g ball of Natural #0020, 1 of Cranberry #4227 and 1 of Steel Grey #5762, but there were only a few inches of the main color, Natural #0020, left, once done.
If you'd like to knit the large adult size, or if you'd like to knit the average adult size, but you knit very loosely, we recommend the large kit, which comes with 2 balls of whatever main color you select.
